El Descanso Specialty Coffee
Nobody was
selling rest
A specialty coffee micro-roastery co-founded in New Zealand, built around a single conviction.
With this work
- Built a brand around rest in a category mostly selling speed.
- Developed four packaging lines with a coherent visual language across origins and roast profiles.
- Carried the conviction into sourcing, paying 2x to 21x the C market to prove it.
- Drove a 20% increase in website traffic through email campaigns.
Challenge
Most specialty coffee brand in New Zealand was selling speed and function. El Descanso was built around a different proposition, coffee as an invitation to rest. The challenge was not just to communicate that, it was to build a brand coherent enough to make it believable, across packaging, digital presence, and customer experience.
Approach
Brand strategy began with the conviction, not the category. The idea came from a personal observation about rest in coffee culture, sharpened into a brand proposition. If rest was the proposition, everything had to embody it, the visual language, the tone, the UX, the email rhythm. Research into the New Zealand specialty coffee market confirmed the gap, no one was occupying the slow end of the spectrum. That became the positioning.
Solution
Four packaging lines were developed, Community, Pachamama, Harvest, and Experimental, each with a distinct visual identity anchored in the same typographic and color system. Digital presence was built around the same logic, no urgency, no noise. Email campaigns were designed for the reader who already believed in slowness.
Results
A 20% increase in website traffic from email campaigns and a 33% reduction in cart abandonment followed UX improvements. The coffee behind the brand was sourced directly, at prices ranging from 2x to 21x the C market, because the supply chain answered to the same conviction as the design. El Descanso became recognisable as the specialty coffee brand that was not trying to be anything else.
